Igutha Coffee Factory is located in Gikondi location, Giathigu sub-location, Mukurweini District, Nyeri County. Situated 170 km north of Nairobi, this factory is nestled between the majestic Mt. Kenya and the Aberdare ranges, providing an ideal environment for coffee cultivation.

The factory is set on red volcanic soils, rich in minerals and organic matter essential for premium coffee production. With an annual rainfall of 1,100mm and an altitude of 1,600 meters above sea level, the region enjoys cool temperatures ranging from 12°C to 26°C, perfect for growing coffee.

At Igutha Coffee Factory, the coffee cherries are meticulously hand-picked and delivered to the wet mill on the same day. The cherries are then sorted to remove underripe, overripe, and foreign matter, ensuring only the finest cherries are processed.

Wet Processing

The cherries undergo wet processing using clean river water, following stringent quality-driven methods. After pulping, the cherries ferment for 12 to 48 hours, depending on the ambient temperature. The coffee is then fully washed to remove all traces of mucilage and graded before drying.

Sun Drying

The beans are sun-dried on raised drying beds for 2 to 3 weeks, turned regularly, and covered during the hottest part of the day. This careful drying process preserves the unique flavors of Ithuga AA coffee.

Igutha Coffee Factory is managed by a dedicated team led by a factory manager who oversees all activities, from weighing and sorting coffee to paying farmers and addressing their concerns. The cooperative includes 700 members, each contributing to the factory's success and sustainability.

Igutha Coffee Factory is committed to sustainable farming. The factory has implemented soak pits for wastewater, encouraging members to plant trees on their farms. Additionally, farmers receive training in Good Agricultural Practices and support for school and farm improvements through cooperative financing.
